Generally good with some issues
Having tried a few other similarly styled behind-the-neck headphones, including models by Sennheiser and Sony, and also similarly styled earphones, I find these to be the best fitting and sounding solution for me.
My current pair’s wiring is fraying and stereo is dropping out so I’m shopping for a new pair. I’ve owned 2 pairs of the version this model replaces (SHS5200) and I’m hoping this new version doesn’t ‘fix’ anything needlessly.
My 2 major complaints are there’s no way to replace the foam speaker covers which get sweaty and filthy and fall apart, and the fact that the flimsy wiring eventually frays and disconnects at the jack end.
Pros:
Good sound quality
Sturdy construction
Low profile that fits inside my scooter helmet
Good fit
Cons:
No speaker foam replacement
Rash breaks out wherever the dirty foam or neck band touch my neck
Flimsy wire that will wear out with frequent use (although the rope cover is a nice touch)
Garbage
I was looking for a headset that I could use while working out and jogging. I saw many good reviews on these so I thought I would try them. Well, I hate to say it but they are complete junk. The sound quality is horrible, they hurt my ears after wearing them only for a few minutes and the neckband is not adjustable so they bounce on the back of my neck while I run. While it is bouncing, it is also moving around my ears, which is very annoying and uncomfortable. I bought a real cheap Sansa MP3 player (half the price of this item) that came with an in ear headset and the sound quality is 100 times better than this headset. Do yourself a favor and pay a little more money for a decent pair.
Why Don’t You Already Own These?
These are some awesome headphones. I’ve owned two previous pares of Phillips around the neck head phones and these are the second best (The first pair they’ve discontinued, but were the best headphones I’ve ever owned)! Philips SHN5500/37 Noise-Canceling were first (which were awesome), but then they were replaced with the Philips HN050 Noise Canceling (which were tough plastic, hurt my ears, and just didn’t sound as good, but were ok). The last pair broke down rather fast and I was rather disappointed, but I decided to try these Phillips ones out anyways. Let me start out by saying that the sound is awesome! Everything comes in really clear and crisp, but when I first considered buying these, I was worried that the rich bass would result in over-present bass. This is not the case, as the bass is just clarified in the recordings. The frame is still a hard plastic, but theses don’t hurt my ears at all! The overall production that went into these headphones is really great. Awesome headphones for everyone!
Left Side was Defective Out of the Box
Very Dissatisfied with my purchase. The left side emits absolutely no noise. The right works fine but the noise seems a bit fuzzy (but understandable for the price).
The warranty on the box directs the consumer to [...] where one is able to register their product with “club philips” (you can imagine how annoying this must be to someone with a defective philips product!). After registration, I am still unable to find warranty information on the site and will probably have to call their toll number and wait on the line.
In the future, I will definitely reconsider purchasing their consumer electronics.
Good sound but don’t expect noise cancelling
Great headphones! Sound is preety good and it’s pretty light on your ears. If you have a big big head as I do be prepared for the back part of this headphone (the arch) touching your neck all the time
but this is something that you’ll get used to very quickly. You’ll sweat a lot on your ear if you got a too hot weather during your workout :-/ On the other side it’s pretty much comfortable when it’s cold outside… because this headphone really gets your ears warm!
Very Good, With a Few Minor Issues
I use headphones when I jog. If you are like me, the “bud” style ear plugs tend fall out or become loose when your body bounces and bumps from running. I got tired of pushing ear buds back in every 30 seconds. So, I started shopping for earphones that would not need constant adjusting during a run.
What I LIKE:
These Philips headphones work very well. They stay securely on my ears, and I almost never have to adjust them during 3-5 mile runs.
The sound is very good – completely acceptable.
The neck band has a reflective layer, which might add to your safety if you find yourself running in low light.
The cord is long, so you can place you iPod of MP3 player anywhere and have plenty of cord length!
My only DISLIKES are:
I usually run on sidewalks, but sometimes find myself on roads for short distances. When on road, I do a lot of looking around for cars, thus, my head turns. Turing your head while wearing these earphone sometimes causes them to budge a little bit.
After longer runs, they start to feel a little uncomfortable over my ears. Nothing dramatic, but just wanted to mentioned as many details as I can to help you decide.
The foam over the speakers could be smoother/softer.
Overall, these have worked well so far, with the minor complaints I mentioned above!
I like these
I bought these to use at my desk. I like the long cloth like cord. I gives me the ability to move around without pulling them off my head. The sound quality is very good. It works well with talk radio and heavy metal. Only complaint, I have a thick neck and the band that goes behind my neck barely makes it. It fits but just barely. Overall this is a good product that performs well. I have had them for over 3 years now.
Awesome headphones!
I bought these headphones for running, and they are really comfortable. The design is beautiful and the sound quality is perfect.
Totally recommend.
Quick to fail
Quickly failed at the plug. I’d buy another if I could get the old ‘L’ style plug as I like the sound and comfort.
Great headphones
I have another pair of the original SHS5200 and they still work great to this day. I’ve only had a pair of these new ones for a few weeks now but so far they have been great. I don’t work out in them but I wear them whenever I am not at work and not sitting at my computer. The sound is full and clear and they sit comfortably on my head. They do not press too hard or too soft, they are really the perfect fit. Highly recommended.
Great sound! But more importantly, sturdy.
I love these headphones… great sound, great bass, great quality for the gym. I generally beat up whatever headphones I have at the gym, and they have held up well. I went through about 3 pairs of the sony G2 similar headphones.
I think these are great for working out & I highly recommend.
Durable but not very comfortable
I was tired of my earbuds continuing to break every few months, so I went with this wrap around headset. Sound quality is okay, I like the bungee cord that makes it hard to pull the cord out of the ear piece.
Not terribly comfortable and you can’t adjust the headset. I find myself constantly repositioning the headset because it hurts my ears. Not too much cushion. Cool looking design.
Excellent for gym and cycling
I owned the previous version of this headphone before (same but the color used to be blue, forgot the model number). It lasted me 4 years and I loved how it attaches to my head comfortably and didn’t fall off all the time in gym and while cycling. I treat my headphones really bad and rarely they survive more than 6 months. Most of them have their cables cut or connections fail. The other ones get crushed in my bag. The main advantage of this headphone is that it is very solid and sturdy. It would be really hard to break it in normal use. It is great for cycling and I cycled few times under heavy rain and it still survived. I bought 3 of the last version and after killing the last one while pulling the cable while it was stuck then I bought this one.
Amazingly, the new version has not changed much. Let me give you a short list so you can decide better:
Cons:
1) Audio quality (bass specially) is not awesome.
2) The cover on the ear piece is not changeable so if you get grossed out wearing the same headphone for years. Then that would be a bit of a problem.
3) It does not fit smaller heads well and falls backward
Pros:
1) The cables is covered by a cloth cover which does not break easily and it is long enough
2) The ear covers have a hard plastic cover which is reflective and make it harder to break
3) The unchangeable ear piece is comfortable and fits perfectly around my head and ears
Okay, but there are better.
I bought these based on the frequency range specs to replace my aging headphones I use on my MP3 player. I use it when I work out, and the old headphones are starting to succumb to the constant bathing in sweat. Some others have reviewed these as being a bit tight. I found the opposite. They were much looser than I prefer. The band around the back of my neck actually sat way away from my neck. I thought the build and overall finish and quality were superb. The big problem was where it counts most….sound. My old headphones, Koss KSC-55, were the absolute best sounding sport headphones under $30 I’ve ever heard. In fact, I’ve read reviews in magazines where they were compared to $300.00 audiophile headphones in sound quality. So, I guess I’m a bit spoiled. Unfortunately, Koss no longer makes these gems. My point being that I had already set the bar extremely high when I purchased the Philips. They just couldn’t meet the mark. The highs were too high and “airy”. The bass was not clean at all, and had distortion when pushed. At comparable volumes with the Koss headphones, the sound from the Philips was distorted and very trashy. Actually, I couldn’t get the Philips to reach a comparable volume. I returned them. Sorry Philips.
Greatest Investment
I’m an active jogger and I’d been using the Phillips headphones for the past three years. I came to realize I took this set of headphones for granted. I picked them up at Target randomly just to replace my old beaten Radio Shack headphones. Just recently my Phillips died and I went out to replace them with iLuv brand “sport headphone” only to realize they were the biggest waste of money. I am now looking to get ANOTHER set of Phillips SHS5200 headphones. These headphones are moderately comfortable, durable and have great sound quailty for your sport headphone. I’m definantly an over-the-ear headphone person and these are by far the best over-the-ear headphones I’ve ever used. I found the cord to be interesting in that it was covered in nylon (rope-like)material, good for water resistance. The behind the neck band was a reflective fabric. Lastly the foam covers for the ear pieces were soft and comfortable and I never had issues with them disintegrating with sweat over time like most other headphones. Over all I was impressed with the design and quality of the Phillips SHS5200.
Finally, a pair of headphones that have EVERYTHING I’m looking for!
I’ve been on the search for a good pair of headphones for a long time. I own a couple pairs of Skull Candy earbuds, Klipsch earbuds, even tried the Beats by Dre buds (returned, HORRIBLE!) The problem I’ve been having is for my workouts/jogs, save for an old pair of Skull Candy’s, I haven’t found a pair of earbuds that stay in place especially when jogging and the cord starts bouncing around. After trying my brothers Sennheiser PMX100’s, I was sold on over the ear behind the neck style phones, so I began my search. To cut to it, I picked these, and I’m so happy I did. They’re comfortable, sound AMAZING (as good as PMX100), they stay in place! And they look very nice too. All in all, I love these! Who would have thought after all the money I’ve spent over the years, the phones I’d like best were the cheapest!! Good job Phillips
Surprising….
First, I want to warn everyone on the only price listed here at the moment. I only see these being sold for $59.99 , but I just purchased these at my local CVS for $19.99 before tax. CVS isn’t the cheapest store in the world, so I know that you can find these elsewhere for the same or a similar price. Don’t buy from these over-priced vendors!
With that said, I am severely impressed with the quality of these headphones! My latest pair of headphones started to wear down after a good two years of use. So, I headed out to buy another set, intending on purchasing a product from Sony (as I enjoy the quality). However, when I saw these in the store for a similar price, I decided to give them a try. The sound is superb over my earlier pair of headphones that seemed of similar quality, and I really enjoy the cord-suspension system that helps protect the wear and tear of having these around your head daily!
The bass is alright, and though it leaves a bit to desire, the treble is at a perfect level to make up for what the bass lacks! Too much treble gives me a headache, but with these, I have no problem with the aches of the treble.
The quality of the build is yet to be tested, as I haven’t had these long enough to gauge their durability. However, I would be happy to write another review once they begin to fail at doing their job!
Overall, I am very impressed with this pair of headphones! If you are looking for quality sound out of an affordable pair of headphones, you won’t be disappointed with Philips SHS5200!
Fine headphones for everyday use, comfortable and cost effective
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2I6IVQ647TLRC Here’s my review of the Philips headphones, which I have been using on a daily basis for about six months, and with which I am quite satisfied. Hope you enjoy the video.
Best headphones I’ve ever used
I’ve tried several headphones for working out, but they all pretty bad. I hate the sets that go into your ear because I sweat a lot and they seem to fall out plus they don’t have a good bass sound. I also don’t like the big head phones with the hook around your ear because they’re uncomfortable and the sound quality are sub par. But the Philips SHS5200 are awesome great comfort (very light weight, barely feels like you have it on) and the sound is loud and clear and great bass almost as good as bose but way more affordable. I highly recommend this to anyone that’s looking for great sound quality and comfort for headphones for your workouts.
Great headphones…but…
Like many people have mentioned, crappy jack. Mine went mono after about 4 months. Unfortunate too, these are comfortable, light, put out good sound, and are cheap as hell.
