Skullcandy FMJ: Good sound output but poor microphone and uncomfortable
I got a pair of silver Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket earbuds with an inline mic. After using them for a few days, I’ve discovered the following:
- They’re hard to get to stay in your ear. They come with four sizes of tips (small-plastic, medium-plastic, large-plastic, and large-foam). The only ones I found would hold the earbuds in were the large-pastic ones. Unfortunately, my ears aren’t that large, so the fit isn’t comfortable for more than 10 minutes of use. It might be okay for others, I suppose it depends on how your ear is shaped.
- The casing is large, sticks out in the middle, has a sharp edge on the back, and is made of metal. In my case, this means that the earbud is pressing uncomfortably against the side of my ear. Again, not very comfortable.
- The call quality with the in-line mic leaves much to be desired. Specifically, there just isn’t enough gain. I have to hold the microphone up in front of my mouth to get decent audio out of it.
- That being said, the sound produced is pretty good. Keep in mind these are sound isolating earbuds: they block your ear canal and you won’t hear much else. This can be good or bad, depending on the environment you’re using them in.
- As for the build of the headphones itself, it seemed sturdy enough. The cables were molded into the earbuds, so I don’t see them coming loose easily. I was a little disappointed that the braided cord was covered in plastic — it would be much nicer (and less likely to tangle) without the coating.
Overall: Good audio output quality, but between the poor microphone gain and lack of comfort, I think I’ll stick with the stock headphones from my iPhone.
They do not work with Iphone 4
I received the headphones plugged them into my iphone 4 and the mic didn’t work and the headphones had a low volume hum type noise. These or the 09 model of the FMJ. Sent back to skullcandy about 3 weeks back, haven’t heard from them, so I went to their website and noticed that they now have added on the description page of the headphones that they do not work with the Iphone 4. I feel stupid as I bought them to use with my iphone 4 and thought I did enough research.
